Mike & Katie's Alpine Adventures - Days 5 & 6 (Austria!)

We began day five (Monday 7/17) by saying goodbye to our Klagenfurt apartment. It was a short stay, but it served its purpose by giving us a convenient place to sleep which was only about 15 minutes by foot from the soccer stadium where Sting performed the night before. We took a taxi to the Klagenfurt HBF train station and boarded the train for a three-hour ride to Salzburg Austria.

Once we got to Salzburg, we grabbed an Uber and headed to hotel Hofwirt, at the heart of charming old town Salzburg. After unpacking and resting up a bit, we headed down to the patio to meet up with our tour guide and meet some of our fellow travelers. We decided to book a Rick Steves "my way" tour in which the transportation and hotels are taken care of on our trip. We get to decide what we want to do and what we want to see at each destination point. The best thing is that we don't get stuck having to do a bunch of things with people we don't know, LOL.

That evening we walked the main pedestrian drag (Linzer Gasse), did some window shopping, and ended up eating a rooftop dinner at the Steinterrasse restaurant which overlooked all of old town Salzburg (see the amazing pictures!!).

The following day (Tuesday 7/18) we decided to forego a long trip to Berchtesgaden and the Eagle's Nest (Hitler's old stomping grounds) in order to take in more sights in old town Salzburg. We ended up taking a Rick Steves' self-guided walking tour (through our earbuds and Rick Steves Audio Europe app which highlighted the main attractions to be seen). Among the sites we took in were the Mozartplatz, Residenzplatz, Residenz, the Salzburg Cathedral, Kapitelplatz, St. Peter's Cemetery, St. Peter's Abbey and Church, Monchsberg Cliff Face, Getreidegasse, and Mozart's birthplace.

After finishing the walking tour, we visited the impressive Hohensalzburg Fortress which towers over the city sitting atop a very high hill. It was quite the elevation change and the view from the top was breathtaking. When we finished, we headed over to the Mirabell Gardens and palace to check out all of the flower gardens. Absolutely beautiful.

Tomorrow we hop on the bus and head to Bolzano Italy and the Dolomite mountains within the Alps. Until then, auf wiedersehen!!
